Gynaecology - Postmenopausal Bleeding Clinic

As part of the Gynaecology Outpatients Department, we offer a Postmenopausal Bleeding Clinic, which is located in the Peterborough District Hospital Clinic 4.

We aim to see you within two weeks of receiving your referral from your GP for your initial appointment.

The first appointment will normally be held on a Monday afternoon, where you will be seen by Mr Havenga.  In his absence, you will be seen by one of his colleagues.

At this visit you will be asked questions about your general health, any medications you may be taking and about the bleeding you have been having.  You will also be examined, and then go on to have an ultrasound scan performed.  A biopsy at this stage may be obtained.

If you scan shows an abnormality of the womb that needs to be  further, you will need to return at a later date for a hysteroscopy.  This is an investigation performed in the outpatients department that looks inside your womb.  It can cause period like crampy pains, but is normally well tolerated.  Again we will try to see you within two weeks from your first appointment.  A more detailed leaflet about this investigation will be given to you at this stage.

The following patient information leaflets are available:

  • Postmenopausal Bleeding Clinic
  • Hysteroscopy (given in clinic if required)

What we do

We offer a service for women who have gone through the menopause, and have since had episodes of vaginal bleeding, that needs to be investigated.  Or are taking HRT and have had bleeding.  Any unusual bleeding needs to be investigated.  In 90% of cases examination and investigations will find either no obvious cause or an innocent one.
