Patient Choice

Patients requiring planned surgery can now choose where they would like to have their treatment.

Since the beginning of 2006, GPs have been able to offer a patient a choice of up to four hospitals they can be referred to for specialist services.

In addition, since May 2006, Peterborough & Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has also been able to offer consultation treatment to people from across England, from Newquay to Newcastle under the Extended Choice initiative.

The Extended Choice initiative means that patients can now be offered the four options plus a choice of Foundation Trusts in England, that have the capacity available to treat patients from outside of their traditional catchment area.
