Therapy Services

Therapy Services provides Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy across our three hospital sites, Peterborough District Hospital, Edith Cavell Hospital and Stamford Hospital.  It employs over 100 staff, including therapists, assistants and technicians, administrative and clerical staff.

Philosophy:
Therapy Services are a team of Healthcare Professionals committed to providing high quality patient centred care within the standards laid down by the College of Occupational Therapy and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.  We aim to work in partnership with you to achieve your maximum potential within the available resources and evidence based practice.

Structure:
Therapy Services is led by the Therapy Services Manager, supported by a Professional Development Advisor for Occupational Therapy, a Professional Development Advisor for Physiotherapy, and four Clinical Leads for Medicine, Musculoskeletal, Critical Care and Women and Child.

The following clinical services are delivered by integrated Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy teams incorporating joint Therapy Assistants and Technicians:

•  Medicine - including services to Accident and Emergency, General Medicine
   inpatients, Medicine for the Elderly, and Neurological Rehabilitation Unit (formerly
   Stroke Unit)
•  Critical Care - covering Amputee rehabilitation, General Surgery inpatients, 
   Intensive Care, HDU,  Respiratory patients throughout the hospital, Cardiac
   Rehabilitation and Pulmonary Rehabilitation
•  Musculoskeletal - including trauma and elective orthopaedic inpatients,
   Rheumatology, Hand Therapy and Musculoskeletal outpatient physiotherapy
•  Woman & Child - including Respiratory Paediatrics, Musculoskeletal Paediatrics and
   Women’s and Men’s Health

Hand therapy specific:
•  Inflammatory Arthritis
•  Osteoarthritis
•  Elective surgery (dupuytrens fasciectomies / trigger finger releases / joint
   replacements/ carpal tunnel decompressions) 
•  Trauma (fractures / dislocations/ ligament injuries/ tendon injuries)
•  Multiple trauma

Critical care
Vascular surgery, general surgery, colorectal surgery, lower and upper limb amputee surgery, general issues relating to reduced mobility, COPD, Bronchiectasis, Chest infections, Pneumonia, Lung cancer, Hyperventilation Syndrome, Asthma,

Specialist clinics – which specialist – location and times
Amputee Satellite clinic – Fridays PDH 8.30 – 12.30
Bronchiectasis Clinic – Monday (once a month) PDH
Respiratory Outpatients – Tues and Thurs AM PDH

The Musculoskeletal team runs a variety of classes aimed at making the patient fit to perform their normal daily  and or sporting routines. The classes include: -

.  Advanced knee
.  Ankle
.  Hand
.  Intermediate lower limb
.  Shoulder

Certain staff members have undergone specific post-graduate training to enable them to undertake acupuncture as an adjunct to their therapy treatment. However, they do not accept direct referrals for acupuncture treatment.

The Orthopaedic team currently provide a 6-day service to the elective orthopaedic wards.
